Procedure For Studio Recording

1 Channels

The mixing board is always ON.  Begin your set-up by selecting which microphones you will use during your session.

Mics 1 through 4 are at the table.  The mic at the mixing console is called the Presenter mic, and is on channel 5.

To use these mics, press INPUT 2 button, and the Mic source indicator will light up in the window at the top of the channel column.

2 Fader, ON/OFF

Each channel has its own fader.  To open the channel, press the ON button.

5 LEVELS

(With the Channel ON) Have someone speak into a microphone and move the fader up on that channel on the mixing board until the VU meter moves..

Raise the channel fader so that the VU meter on that channel shows a reading between -10 and -1.

If the needle rides between -20 and -10, the level so too low; raise the fader.

If the VU meter needle goes into the RED area, the level is too high; lower the fader.

If the red DIG CLIP indicator lights up, lower the fader so the CLIP light on the channel fader does not light up.

6 Adjustments

To make adjustments in EQ or TRIM, first press SELECT on the channel you want to control, then make the adjustments needed.  The adjustments will apply only to the channel that has the lighted SELECT button.

As you turn the knob to the plus or minus, indicator lights will show the level of adjustment

6a (phone)

For telephone interviews, the telephone line is dedicated to channel 12 on the mixing board.  On the tabletop next to the mixing board is the phone box.  To power ON, set the switch to I.

On the mixer, open channel 12 so you can hear the phone line.

On the phone box press CALL to open a line and DROP to disconnect.  The keypad works just like any other phone.

Telephone calls typically need to have the LF (Low Frequency) Equalization control turned down to a minimum because of noise in the phone lines.

In most cases, a regular telephone will yield better sound quality than a cell phone.
